The work of the Yamoussoukro golf course, under the will of Felix Houphouet-Boigny and designed by architect Dave Thomas, a former Welsh champion, began in September 1977. They ended more than 24 months later. If the configuration of the ground has made it possible to insert an exceptional layout, it was not the same on the other hand for its subsoil which proved particularly difficult to work. Sixteen kilometers of trenches were dug to install a fully automatic irrigation system of the most modern, to deposit pipes of diameter ranging from 150 mm to 40 mm and resistant to more than 10 kg / cm2. Nearly 550 automatic sprinklers were buried, discharging more than 2,300,000 liters in less than 8 hours at a pressure of nearly 6 kg. A pumping station of 2 engines of 75 hp each was installed, drawing nearly 80 liters per second in the lake of 6 ha located in the middle of the course.
The construction of this course on a field of 75 hectares was carried out by more than 40 men maneuvering Caterpillar D8 and D7, Poclain shovels, etc., sowing 35 ha of fairways with more than 7000 kg of bermuda seed, 15 ha of rough and planting 13,000 m² of dwarf tifton greens, specially from the United States. More than 6,000 tons of sand were needed for the construction of greens and tees and tons of fertilizer were dumped. The lake of 6 hectares, located in the middle of the course, shelters lazy crocodiles (nicknamed Lacoste by the caddies) who come to lay their eggs in the bunkers.

Nestled in lush greenery, Hotel President consists of a classic Building of 146 rooms (inaugurated in 1973) adjoining a modern Tower of 139 rooms (inaugurated in 1980) surmounted by a panoramic restaurant. The author is Olivier Cacoub, said "the architect of the Old" (affectionate nickname of the then president, Felix Houphouet-Boigny). The lobby of the Tower, with its high marble pillars and chandeliers, is not without evoking, but smaller, that of the Foundation for the search for peace of the same architect.
With 285 rooms and suites, 16 conference rooms, 4 restaurants, an alocodrome and a country area, the President Hotel has an internal capacity of 2,000 people.

In March 1983, Yamoussoukro became the political and administrative capital of Cote d'Ivoire, succeeding in a century, Grand-Bassam (1893-1900), Bingerville (1900-1933) and Abidjan (1933-1983). In addition to its central position within the territory of Côte d'Ivoire, one of the justifications given at that time by the President of the Republic Felix Houphouet-Boigny, who had made the decision, was that the three previous capitals were the result of an exclusive choice of the only colonizer and that the designation of Yamoussoukro as new capital thus became a purely national choice.
Administratively, Yamoussoukro is located in the Region of Lakes which also includes the departments of Toumodi, Tiébissou and Didiévi.
The department of Yamoussoukro comprises 4 sub-prefectures: Attiégouakro, Didiévi, Tie Ndiékro, Yamoussoukro. Its total area is about 3,500 km² for 300,000 inhabitants, ie a density of 86 inhabitants per km², above the national average, which is estimated at 50 inhabitants per km². It is bordered to the north by the departments of Tiébissou and Bouaké, to the east by the departments of Dimbokro and Bocanda, to the west by the departments of Bouaflé and Sinfra and to the south by the department of Toumodi.
